What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small file stored in your web browser that is recognised by the website when you visit it again. Cookies make it possible to send individualised information to your browser. Cookies can contain texts, figures or a date, but there is no personal information stored in a cookie. A cookie is not a software program and a cookie does not contain or spread viruses or other malware. Almost every website contains cookies.

Our cookies store some of the following information:

  • Which pages you visited, when you visited them and for how long - your “electronic footprint”.
  • Which browser you are using e.g. Chrome, Firefox or Safari.
  • Your screen resolution e.g. 1920 x 1080 pixels.
  • What operating system you are using, e.g. Windows 10, Windows 8 or OS X.
  • What type of device you are using, e.g. desktop computer, tablet or smartphone.
  • The website you were on before visiting

You leave an “electronic footprint” when you browse online. The footprint reveals where you have been. You leave a footprint because your browser relays information to a server - e.g. “I would like to visit”.

Most browsers provide information on the manufacturer and version number, and the server will then return the site you have requested tailored to your browser.

When your browser requests an address, e.g., it will also send additional information to the server in question, including your IP address (your internet “address”), so the servers know where to send the site you have requested.
